A letter from the founder
Dear reader,
Milk sharing is as old as motherhood – wet nurses fed other people's babies for millennia, it was for the longest time the most ordinary thing in the world. But when I went looking for somewhere to take my own full freezer, I found the seedy side of the internet instead: anonymous classifieds, wire transfers and awkward messaging. The milk was wholesome, the venue wasn't, and that is the whole origin of MilkMom.
So this is my attempt at the community that should have existed all along. A freezer stash is an asset, not an embarrassment and the woman who filled it should be able to pass it on for a fair price, or give it away just as easily, and be met with respect either way. Milk that would have been tipped away feeds a baby instead, and nothing about that needs whispering.
A community begins with whoever turns up first, and today that is a mailing list, a stack of free guides and an inbox I answer myself - so feel free to tell me what's missing! The guides are open to sellers, to buyers and to the merely curious. If any of this speaks to you, register your interest and come and help build the rest of it. The first sellers get a real say in the rules while they are still being written.
A full freezer, a fair price and a baby fed at the other end, passed from one kitchen to the next: what could be more wholesome than that?
Lisa, the mom who started MilkMom
